This was more of an experiment than anything else. I was searching for nail fashion trends and came across a photo of checkered nails and instantly fell in love. Last week I wore bright color, but I had two that I was dying to see together on one nail and with a whole Saturday free I had time to experiment. And it took ALL day.
I started out by testing a tip I’d come across a while ago: Using clear tape to make a design. When you do your own nails it’s nearly impossible to get a straight line. Finally a way to make a cute design with a steady hand! I found that the idea was decent enough, for a larger patch the tape wouldn’t stick well enough and I couldn’t get it to apply evenly to my nail. In the end I just used the tape much like painter’s tape. I set down the pattern. Painted over the tape then peeled it off so I had a crisp edge. It worked well enough and when I dulled the tape stickiness (by sticking it to my hand first) it didn’t peel off any of the paint below. I still had to do a bit of touching up, but it was easy as both colors were opaque enough that they could cover up the other.
Hopefully I can use the tape tip for stripes some other time. And get some masking tape which is actually meant for this purpose. It could also add an interesting texture and may lay flatter on the nail.
